Obituary for Adele R. Altman

ALTMAN- Adele R. Altman, MD, age 86, of Albuquerque, New Mexico died peacefully in her sleep at her residence on Thursday, July 8, 2010 surrounded by family members, close friends and her loving caretakers. Adele was preceded in death by her husband and best friend, Emmett Altman, MD in 1999, her parents Salla and Bruno Rosenhain, MD and her brother, Felix Rosenhain, MD. She is survived by her sister, Marion Diamond of Boca Raton, Florida; daughter Karen Altman, MD and her friend Joe Silvey of Santa Monica, CA; sons Brian Altman, MD and his wife, Giselle Minoli of Woodstock, VA, Alan Altman, MD and his wife, Kathy of Albuquerque, NM; grandchildren, Ryan Altman, PhD of Huntington Beach, CA, Meaghan Altman and her fiancé, Alex Khislavsky, of Lafayette, IN, Kelly Altman and his wife, Ashley of San Antonio, TX, Kaela Altman of Chicago, IL, Kyle Altman of St. Paul, MN, and Kevin Altman of Woodstock, VA, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Adele was born in Tel Aviv, Palestine on June 4, 1924. The family later escaped to New York City from Germany in 1933 where Bruno established his medical profession in General Practice. Adele attended the Kew Forest School in Kew Gardens, NY, and earned her undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan, where she met her husband, Emmett of Far Rockaway, NY. They were wed in New York City on September 3, 1944. Adele earned her Medical degree at the New York Medical College and served as an Assistant and Associate Professor of Radiology at The Brooklyn Jewish Hospital and The New York Medical College until the family moved to Albuquerque in 1967. She then continued her career at the University of Oklahoma and the University of New Mexico prior to retiring from medicine in 1988. Known as “Machine Gun Altman” for her rapid slide-projector presentations, she was held in high esteem by her students and colleagues for her love of teaching. Adele was a lover of pets and horses, spending many hours riding on the bosque. Prior to becoming ill, her hobbies included cooking, knitting, and traveling with Emmett, including two trips to China and one to Antarctica. She had also been active in the New Mexico Anti-Defamation League B’Nai Israel, serving on the State Board of Directors for about fifteen years, the Jewish Catholic Dialogue, and Hadassah. She continued as an avid reader up to the time of her death. The family wants to thank her physicians Jeffrey Ross, MD and Richard Seligman, MD for their friendly and compassionate care. VistaCare Hospice assisted in her comfort allowing her to spend her final days at home. Special thanks are offered to Sue Stevens and Carol Kelly, her dedicated caretakers and companions over the last decade of her life, and to neighbors and close friends Cathy and Jeff Robb. Pallbearers are her grandchildren Ryan Altman, Meaghan Altman, Kelly Altman, Kaela Altman, Kyle Altman, and Kevin Altman.
