Obituary for Stoughton Bell II

BELL"Stoughton Bell II, 86, UNM Professor Emeritus of Computer Science and Mathematics and Statistics died quietly at home Thursday, November 18, 2010. He was born to Conrad Bell, MD and Florance E. Ross of Waltham, Massachusetts. Husband, father and friend to many, Sto was known for his endless curiosity, piercing intellect and unfailing good humor. He attended Harvard College and the University of California at Berkeley where he received a Ph.D. in applied mathematics in 1955. He was a WWII veteran, a research mathematician, and later a Division Supervisor at Sandia Laboratories. In 1964, he moved into academia, becoming the first Director of the UNM Computing Center. He worked there for a decade before devoting his time to teaching and research. In 1968 he proposed that a Division of Computing and Information Science be created which later became the Department of Computer Science in the College of Engineering. Sto authored and co-authored numerous papers and books with particular interest in Decision Theory and Modeling and Simulation. Outdoorsman and explorer, ice hockey player and bike rider, Sto enjoyed many activities and conversations with friends and family. Wife, Edna Casman; children Karen, Mark, Nathaniel and JB Bell, as well as step-children Lisa, Marcus and Jesse Casman, along with partners, grandchildren and great-grandchildren are gathering over Thanksgiving week to celebrate his life and grieve their loss. Cremation will take place and any public memorial will be announced at a later time. Services have been entrusted to:
